The Final Ride

The Final Ride

Leahy and wife Marcelle after 2016 victory

In November 2016, Senator Leahy was elected for the 8th time to the United States Senate. Senator Leahy beat Republican hopeful Scott Milne pretty easily. The incumbent senator received 61.9% of votes while is challenger rounded up 33%. During the election cycle, Leahy ran on a platform promising to promote Vermont brands, farmers, and first responders as well as create economic growth, defend civil rights, and protect the environment. Leahy's platform very much corresponds with his committee assignments and legislation he has introduced during his time in the Senate, and is an attribute to his homestyle. At a press conference late last year, the senator stated, "I learned early in my career that good judgement and hard work are exactly what Vermonters expect from their representatives."

As for 2022, Leahy has chosen pension over political tension. He announced in his retirement last November stating, "It is time to put down the gavel. It is time to pass the torch to the next Vermonter, who will carry on this work for our great state." Leahy plans to spend his retirement with his family, but especially his wife Marcelle. I wonder if Leahy has plans to appear in any more Batman movies?

Leahy currently has $2 million in unspent campaign finances. Eventually Leahy will have to allocate that money—most likely to charities or other candidates—but for now the senator is focused on completing his term before making any decisions.

Representative Peter Welch is favored to win Leahy's open seat and has even been endorsed by Senator Bernie Sanders, Vermont's other Senator. If elected, Welch would only be the second Democrat from Vermont to be elected to the the U.S. Senate.
