     Patrick Leahy was born on March 31, 1940, Montpelier, Vermont. Leahy graduated from Saint Michael's College with a Bachelor's Degree in 1961 before pursuing a Juris Doctorate from Georgetown. After graduating, he returned to Vermont where he soon became the State's Attorney in Chittenden County. At the end his eight year term, Leahy was known for this law enforcement activities. This lead him to be named as one of three outstanding prosecutors. In the wake of Watergate, Leahy was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1974 at just 34 years old. 

    47 years later, Senator Leahy announced his retirement on November 15, 2021. During his tenure in Senate, Leahy was assigned to numerous committees and subcommittees. He also served as Chairman for the Senate Appropriations Committee and President Pro Tempore of the Senate, a position he has held since 2012. 

    Senator Leahy has sponsored and cosponsored over 9,000 bills during his time in the Senate and is extremely active in a myriad of issues including human rights, defense, and environmental protections. He has an Americans for Democratic Action (ADA) Score of 100%. Meaning he votes within the Democratic party lines. I believe is largely due to his leadership positions and the current political divide between parties.
